Why I’m Running

Hello neighbors,

My name is Farhio Khalif, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for State Senator in our newly formed district 37!  I am the mother of 2 sons, and for the last 7 years, I have been an actively engaged member of the community of Maple Grove.

I was born in Somalia but moved to Italy at a young age to escape the violence in my country. In the 1990s, opportunities brought me to the United States. Since moving to Minnesota, I have been involved in addressing the many issues facing women, immigrants, and people of color. I have been particularly active around the issues of education, housing, domestic violence, health, and public safety.

My work as the President of the St. Paul Branch of the NAACP, Vice President of the Metropolitan Interfaith Council on Affordable Housing (MICAH), Vice Chair of the Unity Community Mediation Team, Voice of East African Women, and a member of the Parent Advisory Committees in Minneapolis and Osseo School Districts.  Through my work, I have gained a reputation as a tireless advocate, bridge builder, and trusted collaborator with groups working on issues of importance to our state and community.  This is why I’m running.

Minnesota is at a critical inflection point. We have a unique opportunity to creatively address those challenges and create a new and better Minnesota for all. I am running for the Senate in District 37 because I believe challenging times like today require a new kind of leadership – a leadership that I can provide.

I have my finger on the pulse of my community, which keeps me in touch with the issues facing the individuals and families in my district and in Minnesota. This is why I’m running to be your Senator in District 37.

I recognize that all voices need to be heard if effective solutions to the current challenges are to be implemented. I believe my experiences, skills, and dedication to my community are what is needed in today’s rapidly changing society. Approaches of the past are no longer effective. Collaborative, inclusive, innovative, and creative leadership is what is needed today. That’s what I will bring to the Senate.

I look forward to connecting with you and listening to your priorities for you and your family. Together we can make our communities better for all Minnesotans.
